The heart of the ioDIGITAL system is its digital shower valve, which is sized to fit within a traditional 2-inch by 4-inch framed wall, and comes with push-fit connectors that work with PEX, CPVC and copper supply tubes. Plumbers can also use traditional soldered connections, if they prefer.
* The Moen ioDIGITAL system is certified to cUPC with applicable standards ASSE 1016 and ASME A112.18.IM/CSA B125.I (shower valves), CSA B125.3 9 (Roman tub valves), ASSE1070 (Roman tub valves) and UL1951. All ioDIGITAL system components are backed by a five-year limited warranty, and the finishes and mechanical components feature a Lifetime Limited Warranty.
A year after its introduction, Moen's ioDIGITAL system is wowing homeowners and plumbers alike. With models for the shower, vertical spa and Roman tub, the appeal to homeowners is obvious. Intrusive and confusing control valves are replaced with and intuitive and aesthetically pleasing ioDIGITAL controller that mounts easily to the finished wall. Family members can set their preferred water temperature and flow rate, then recall the setting with the push of a button. This intuitive operation and personalization make the system extremely user-friendly.
ioDIGITAL offers as many advantages to plumbers as to users. "Our goal was to create an easy-to-use system, but we knew that it was just as important to address the needs of plumbers and installers," says Mark Knurek, senior product manager, Moen. "ioDIGITAL is easy to install relative to similar custom shower systems with multiple controls or other digital systems."
In fact, plumbers who have installed this technology enthusiastically recommend it to other plumbers for its reliability and uncomplicated installation. One of these is Greg LaPensee of Holmes Beach, Fla., who used ioDIGITAL in his own home to plumb a spa shower with nine heads. He says the installation was simpler than building the shower from scratch. "I was impressed that such a complex system was so simple to install," he says.
This simplicity results from an innovative valve and user interface. The user interface (the control pad mentioned above) can be mounted in any location, whether on the wall outside a shower or on the deck of a Roman tub. A data cable connects the interface to a sealed digital valve unit, which can be installed up to 30 feet away.
The valve unit features two inlets for the incoming hot and cold water supplies, and either one or four outlets for the lines that feed the faucets and sprays. The plumber need only attach the water lines to the valve unit and plug it into a nearby 110-volt electrical outlet.
"I used significantly less pipe and labor than I would have used to do it the old-fashioned way," recalls Fort Collins, Colo., plumber Willie Burns, who used ioDIGITAL on a spa shower and Roman tub combination. He says that the labor savings were enough to offset much of the cost.
ioDIGITAL also requires fewer trim components (handles and knobs) than conventional tubs and showers. This creates a clean, high-tech look that will complement any bath decor, from traditional to modern.
These plumbers say that ioDIGITAL's blend of convenience, style and reliability* makes it a product they will enthusiastically recommend. "It's a wonderful technology," says Burns. "It saves water, it offers temperature control, it's easy to install and use. I'm really going to push it to my customers."
